A special outdoor projection event will be held to celebrate a local amateur historian and businessman.

Somerset Film will present "Christmas Sparkes" in honour of C S John Sparkes at Burtle Village Hall on December 14.

The event celebrates one year of the project called "A Village Apart, Villages Together", named after Mr Sparkes' book.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund supported the project, while Seed Sedgemoor is backing this final event.

Bristol-based sound artist Matt Davis will perform a unique soundtrack to the films created especially for the occasion.

The soundtrack includes recordings and live sounds generated by everyday items, some of which have been crafted with the help of Burtle Silver Band musicians.

Over the past year, volunteers and the Somerset Film team have been busy digitising Mr Sparkes' collection of more than 300 films.

His wife, Valerie Sparkes, entrusted this collection to the charity.

After the outdoor projection screening, there will be an opportunity to view more of the digitised material inside the village hall.

Deb Richardson said: "We’re so grateful to our funders, supporters, and volunteers for making this project and event happen, in particular the players of the National Lottery.

"To thank them we will be providing mince pies and mulled wine to those who attend with a scratch card or lottery ticket.

"We’d also like to thank the Ponsillo Family, who have kindly allowed us to use the outdoor space next to the hall."

Scott O’Hara from Seed Sedgemoor added: "Seed are pleased to be supporting an event that is the culmination of so much hard work and has brought so many people together, and allowing the community to share and celebrate their memories."

Tickets for the event are free but limited, so advance booking is essential.
