THE Government’s decision to “reconsider” plans for the new Chilton Trinity Technology College has placed a huge question mark over the town’s proposed new leisure centre and swimming pool complex.

It was to be built alongside the new Chilton Trinity school as part of the Building Schools for the Future project.

Sedgemoor District Council leader Duncan McGinty said he remained confident Education Secretary Michael Gove would look favourably on Chilton Trinity, because it was inextricably linked to the new pool.

He said: “I’m still very hopeful. We should know within the next three weeks.”

Cllr McGinty admitted no alternative pool plans have been put in place should Chilton Trinity not get the go-ahead, and said the council would not discuss the pool until the Government made its decision on BSF.

He insisted, however, that the council had not made a mistake by tying its new community pool in with the BSF project.

He added: “The only financially viable option was to have the pool at Chilton. It was costing us £700,000 every year to keep the Splash going.”
