WORK on three new schools in Bridgwater could start within weeks, it has been confirmed.

Last week the Mercury revealed how the Government had given the go-ahead for the new Chilton Trinity, Elmwood and Robert Blake schools, despite scrapping the overall Building Schools for the Future project.

Somerset County Council now hopes to sign its contract for the three schools with developer BAM PPP later this month, with construction beginning soon after.

The project at Chilton Trinity will also involve a new sports centre and swimming pool.

A spokesman for Chilton Trinity Sports Centre said: “We are delighted with recent news that the Chilton project will be going ahead and we are very much looking forward to working with Somerset County Council, BAM and their supply chain to progress the construction for the new leisure centre and swimming pool in the near future.”

Somerset County Council said that because of the delay in getting the go-ahead from the Government, the completion date for Robert Blake, Chilton Trinity and Elmwood was now likely to be later than the original target - September 2012.
