THE parents of a severely disabled woman fear she and dozens of other vulnerable adults will suffer when a day centre in Bridgwater closes.

Services at Somerset County Council's Enterprise Resource Centre, in Northgate, for disabled people with learning difficulties, are moving to the new YMCA complex in Friarn Avenue.

There will also be provisions at a second, as yet unconfirmed location, in Bridgwater.

Lyn and John Lapham have been taking their 38-year-old daughter Tracey, who suffers from rare genetic disorder Trisomy, to the Enterprise Centre three times a week for the past seven years.

They believe she and the 35 or so other disabled users will miss out on its vital facilities, which include a hydrotherapy pool, gym, music room, café, and sensory room.

Lyn told the Mercury: “It was fantastic for her; it gave her a chance to socialise and provided the stimulation she so desperately needs - without it she will sink into depression.

“Tracey won't lose her care but the quality of her care won't be the same elsewhere and my husband and I are in our 60s and will struggle to cope.

“They are a very vulnerable group of adults and the services on offer there are a lifeline.”

Somerset County Council said staff and users at the Enterprise Centre had been kept informed over the last three years that it was no longer fit for purpose and would cost too much to bring up to standard.

Around half the users will be catered for at the YMCA, and until a second premises is secured the other half will continue to use the Enterprise Centre.
