A SEDGEMOOR engineer had a royal encounter after being crowned the second best agricultural mechanic in the region.

Neil Miles, from Woolavington, picked up the runners-up prize in the prestigious South-West Agricultural Mechanic of the Year awards at the Royal Bath and West showground on February 2.

The 32-year-old, who works with agricultural and plant equipment at Delta Engineering in Highbridge, was presented with his award by The Countess of Wessex.

Neil, who was taught the trade by his grandfather, said: “It was absolutely brilliant; I didn't think I would get this far because the competition was very strong.”

He added that he was very pleased to get to the final and was hugely honoured to meet the Countess.

The 2011 Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Show, in its inaugural year, was launched to find top mechanics across the South-West and was well supported across the area.
