MESSAGES of support have been sent from Bridgwater to those affected by the deadly earthquake in New Zealand.

Around 100 people have died and at least 220 more are missing following the 'quake, which measured 6.3 on the Richter Scale.

The disaster struck of the coast of the South Island near Christchurch, on Tuesday.

Bridgwater Mayor Bill Montieth said today: "On behalf of the town I would like to send my condolences to those who have lost loved ones, and best wishes to those who are injured.

"I would also like to wish the very best of success to the rescue teams out there - I believe some rescuers from Somerset have headed out to help."

Rev Julia Hicks, curate of St Mary's Church in Bridgwater, said her husband's brother and his family lives on the outskirts of Christchurch.

She was relived to hear they were all fine shortly after the drama unfolded.

Rev Hicks said: "Everyone out there is in our thoughts and prayers as the country recovers."
