A WOMAN involved in a two-car smash on the A38 at Thurloxton last night is said to be in a "life-changing" condition in hospital.

Police and fire crews were called to the incident at the junction of Shearston at 6.45pm.

The A38 was closed both ways at the scene, causing long queues of traffic, and did not re-open until the early hours of this morning.

A woman was trapped in a black Ford Mondeo and had to be removed by fire crews onto a spinal board.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was then rushed to Musgrove Park Hospital where her injuries were described as "life-threatening".

Police said today her condition is now "life-changing" and she is still in hospital.

Firefighters also removed the roof of the other car, a blue Nissan Primera, before carrying a man out on a spinal board.

He was also taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with serious injuries.

It is not known exactly where the man and the woman involved in the collision are from, but they are believed to be from the Avon and Somerset area.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact them on 0845-4567000.
