TESCO'S £11million bid for Bridgwater's Northgate site has moved a step closer after Somerset County Council agreed to sell its share of the land.

Cllr David Huxtable, cabinet member for resources, used delegated powers to offload the county council's 40% share of Northgate to the supermarket giant.

The deal is worth in the region of £4million.

Cllr Huxtable said: “This has been a long, complex and difficult process.

"Although it has not been universally popular, ultimately, the development to the town centre will provide better business opportunities for Bridgwater.

"We’re very happy to support Sedgemoor District Council on this as we can share out the costs and benefits for the public.”

Sedgemoor District Council has already agreed to sell off its 60% ownershup of the land for about £6million.

The proposals include a massive Tesco Extra store selling food, clothes and other goods such as electrical items.

There would be seven other shops on the site, plus some office space, and a huge, 600-space car park, with free parking for up to three hours.
