DAIRY workers in Devon facing the axe are being offered the chance to relocate to Bridgwater.

Robert Wiseman Dairies announced the closure of its milk factory in Okehampton on Thursday, which could lead to 67 redundancies.

Bosses say they will pay for staff to travel or move to the huge dairy between Bridgwater and North Petherton, which is going from strength to strength.

Graeme Jack, communications director, said: “Our Bridgwater plant is now capable of handling 500million litres of milk per annum – 10% of the national requirement.

“The volumes being processed there continue to grow to meet that capacity and as the dairy grows opportunities grow.

“Bridgwater is a success story for us and is developing in terms of jobs and volumes so we are highlighting the opportunity for staff in Okehampton.”

The firm also says there are opportunities for local people to apply for positions at the Bridgwater factory.

Mr Jack added that the Bridgwater dairy’s future is safe due to the huge amount of milk being processed there – 500million litres compared to 25million litres in Okehampton.

He added: “Bridgwater is a crucial part of our network and we are very proud of it.”

Production in Okehampton will end in April in line with operational requirements.
