A FORMER Land Girl from Bridgwater has put together a book about her Second World War memories in aid of charity.

Renee Stone has launched her book The Barfordian for The Mayor’s Fund, which is currently supporting Help for Heroes.

The 86-year-old teamed up with other women from the South-West who helped support the war effort to write the book.

It is based on her memories of Barford Farm, in Spaxton, where the women working there became known as Barfordians.

She said: “The experience as a Land Girl changed me completely. I was from a town, Wolverhampton, and became interested in farming and came to love Barford Farm. I made friends there, which is what it’s all about.

“Joy Grahm, the rector’s daughter, came up with the name Barfordians and that’s what we were.”

More copies are of the book are being printed following the sell-out success of the launch at the Bridgwater Book Shop. The shop was packed out at the event, which Mayor Bill Monteith attended.

Renee said: “It was wonderful; a very successful day.”
