Bridgwater Police Station’s opening hours will be cut by nearly half because fewer people are visiting it, according to a force review.

The station in Northgate is currently open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, but hours will be cut to 8.30am to 4.30pm from June.

Bridgwater’s station is one of several across Avon and Somerset which will see hours cut following a review.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the constabulary was now carrying out a consultation and hoped not to have to make any job cuts.

Inspector Shane Carey, of Bridgwater police, said: “It’s important to stress our commitment to front line duties is not going to be diminished and in no way are we going to reduce our service.”

An 18-month review of how the public uses Avon and Somerset’s police stations reportedly showed visits had plummeted.

The constabulary said more people were phoning or using the internet to contact the police.

People will still be able to see officers outside of the new opening hours by appointment only.

Insp Carey said police would now be expanding their outreach surgeries.

He added: “We think it’s a win-win situation. We are looking to engage more with the community. It’s an opportunity to deliver what’s required locally.”
