THE Post Office says it is looking for a new base in Bridgwater and is open to suggestions from the community about where it should go.

In February, the Mercury reported that Martin's newsagents in Angel Place, where Bridgwater's main post office is based, looks set not to renew its lease when it expires in September.

That could potentially leave Bridgwater without a town centre post office unless a new base can be found.

In a letter sent to Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger, Tony Jones, the Post Office's regional network manager for Wales and the West of England, said it was “open to suggestions” and would be “pleased to explore any viable proposition from the local community”.

The Mercury is also inviting visitors to our website, at bridgwatermercury.co.uk/news, to say where they think it should go.

Chairman of Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce, Steve Leahy, who owns a business in Eastover, said: “It would be fantastic for Eastover's footfall if it moved there but there is a problem with parking - there isn't a lot nearby.

“Bridgwater over the next ten years will become a 'boom town' and for a 'boom town' not to have a post office would be a travesty.”

Ian Liddell-Grainger added: “I think looking at Eastover is a good idea but there are other possible locations to look at and it has got to be in the centre of town.”

The Post Office said it remained committed to providing a service in the centre of Bridgwater.
