GLASTONBURY festival founder Michael Eavis has saved Oxfam in Bridgwater from closure.

The 75-year-old pulled out all the stops to find sponsorship to pay for the rent on the Eastover building.

He also got the rent reduced after shop customers wrote to him appealing for help.

He told the Mercury: “There are so many good people working here and I think we made a good case for everyone. It’s brilliant news.”

The Mercury reported last month the charity’s head office said it was going to close the shop this month because it was not making enough money – despite volunteers saying it had made a profit.

But Sarah Farquhar, head of retail operations at Oxfam, said now the rent not an issue they could work to keep it going.

Shop manager Carol Klimowich said: “We would like to thank all the customers in Bridgwater for supporting us. Myself and the volunteers are delighted that Michael Eavis has been involved.”
