MERCURY readers have bombarded us with suggestions about where the town's main post office should move.

As reported last week, the Post Office says it remains committed to having a town centre base if, as expected, it moves out of Angel Place in September, and it says it is open to suggestions about where it should go.

Our reporter Rory McKeown took a tour of the town centre to show that there is no shortage of potential new homes for the post office; from the bottom of Eastover to the top of High Street, there are 18 empty premises.

The destination of Bridgwater's post office has been the subject of plenty of debate on-line, among our readers at bridgwatermercury.co.uk/news.

Eccentrica_gallumbits said the Cornhill would make an “excellent site for a post office”, while V1234 suggested the old Argos base in Binford Place, and EastoverJosh, Chill12, and Mr Pedant said it should go to Eastover.

Another reader, JulietBravo, said: “All these suggestions are first class. I hope the councillors and those that decide are reading and taking note of what the Bridgwater people want.”

John Capstick, property manager at Tamlyn and Son, which is the estate agent acting for several of the empty shop units, said the Post Office had not yet been in touch about any of them.

He told the Mercury: “We have a number of empty units at the bottom of Fore Street that would be suitable but we haven't heard anything from them.

“They are open to suggestions but are they looking? I would have expected a call before this story broke if they were looking around town for alternatives.”
