ROYAL Mail has apologised to people in Bridgwater and Burnham who have not received their post for up to two weeks.

One worker at the sorting office in Friarn Street, Bridgwater, who does not wish to be named, told the Mercury surcharge letter deliveries were up to a fortnight behind.

He also claimed deliveries of packages were up to a week behind and some items ordered on-line were not being delivered at all from Burnham's sorting office because there were not enough posties to cope with the workload.

He said: “Most days there are some areas of Bridgwater that don't get a delivery. Services to the public have gone to pot and we aren't used to it.”

And talks have also broken down between union officials and Royal Mail over money which workers say they are owed.

Dave Chapple, Bristol branch chairman for the Communication Workers Union, said: “Royal Mail have reneged on their promises to give out £1,500 of share money and £800 of revision bonus money.”

Royal Mail has apologised to any customers in Bridgwater and Burnham who may have experienced disruption to their mail services.

A spokesman said: “We are in the process of recruiting ten new employees across the two delivery offices. In the meantime staff are working extremely hard to ensure a consistent service to our customers.”
