ENMORE Park Golf Club took another step towards getting back to a greater sense of normality, when it officially opened its new marquee to coincide with the lifting of some government restrictions, writes Richard Walsh.
Now after weeks of lockdown, members are able to come in from playing golf and sit around the tables, while still social distancing, and enjoy meeting up with friends and the staff.
Gwen Cavill, club development director, said: “The marquee looks stunning, and all the hard work and effort that went into bidding for a grant to purchase the facility from England Golf has come to fruition and been well worth it."
Phil Taylor and club chairman Martyn Clapp were some of the first customers in the marquee, and were delighted by the new facility.
Taylor said: “My first pint of San Miguel since Christmas was pure nectar.
"It's just fantastic to see the bar open again, and serving our drinks in the marquee.
"The other day, someone said that the golf club was the social cement for many of us.
"I understand that concept; sitting in the marquee with friends - socially distanced, of course - enjoying the beer and the chat was just brilliant.”
The bar staff were also delighted to have returned to work at Enmore.
Fiona Strange, the front of house supervisor and event coordinator, said: “I love being back at Enmore.
"I have missed my fabulous colleagues, the members and the beautiful surroundings.
"I'm really looking forward to welcoming new members and visitors back to the clubhouse as soon as we are allowed.”
Simon Rendle, the club manager, said: "It's great to see people being able to sit and have food and drink after their round.
"For many members, the golf club is their social hub, not just a sports facility.
"Our staff are working tirelessly to ensure that people can enjoy food and drink offering in a Covid-compliant setting.
“The full opening of the Clubhouse will be ready for May 17, when further restrictions will be lifted.
"This will mean we can run the 'Golf in a Day' programmes using the practice facilities with social networking in the Clubhouse.”
