Western Storm had Sophia Smale to thank as they beat Sunrisers to advance in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.

The game took place at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton.

Smale took three wickets and caught two balls, playing a decisive role in Storm's win.

The match saw an outstanding performance from Ellie Anderson, with figures of 4-9 from 2.4 overs, and England senior international Lauren Filer who took 3-19.

Sunrisers, who were chasing a target of 135, were bowled out for 106 in 17.4 overs.

The Storm's victory was also due in part to skipper Sophie Luff, who scored 41, with further contribution from Amanda-Jade Wellington, who brought in 20.

Sunrisers fought back through Eva Grey, Sophie Munro and Mady Villiers, but the home team still managed to muster 134-8 in 20 overs.

However, the field changed when Nat Wraith and Emma Corney hit five boundaries between them, allowing Storm to recover.

Despite a powerful play by Sunrisers' Jodi Grewcock, Wellington turned the tide with successive fours against Grey.

But thanks to a perilous score of 99-5 when Alex Griffiths was bowled by Gray, Storm managed to end their batting with a modest score thanks to Nic Hancock and Luff.

Luff's 34-ball inning carried the team to a respectable total before her final departure at 122-7.

During Sunrisers' turn to bat, Filer struck Grace Scrivens in the first over, transforming the balance of the game.

This was followed by a vital move by Ellie Anderson with three wickets in seven balls, resulting in a premature conclusion to the match.

Sunrisers skipper Grace Scrivens said: "I was really happy with the way things stood after the first innings.

"We performed pretty well with the ball and in the field, and I thought restricting Storm to 134 was a good effort.

"But we lost too many wickets early on and left ourselves with a mountain to climb.

"Cordelia Griffith played really nicely, but the damage had already been done.

"We were all on a high after beating Southern Vipers the other day, and that result makes this defeat all the harder to take."

Western Storm spinner Sophia Smale said: "This sort of performance has been a long time coming, and we showed a lot of fight today.

"We were really determined to put things right and put on a show here at Taunton after a sub-par performance in the last match.

"There were some great individual performances, but the most important thing was that we played well as a team.

"It seemed as though I was a bit of a magnet at mid-on, and I should probably have had a couple of run outs as well."
