SOMERSET went back to the top of the T20 South Group table after a resounding 108-run victory over Glamorgan in front of an all-but-sell-out crowd at Taunton.

After being asked to bat first the Somerset openers took 13 off the first over before Will Smeed notched up his first six of the day when he hoisted Timm van der Gugten high over backward square leg almost into the Brewhouse Car Park.

The openers took the total onto 38 when Tom Banton was bowled by Van her Gugten for 14.

Whilst Tom Kohler Cadmore struggled at the start of his inning Smeed who treated the crowd to an array of fours and sixes to see the score to 63 for one off seven overs.

Smeed was in dazzling form and went to his 50 off 30 balls with a four off Dan Douthwaite to backward square leg.

Shortly after the 50 partnership in 33 balls Kohler-Cadmore was caught on the long on boundary for eight which made the hosts 92 for two in the 10th over.

Smeed lofted Mason Crane high into the St James’ Street car park to see up the 100 in the 11th over. 

Douthwaite changed ends and with the second ball of the over yorked Tom Abell for four making the hosts 108 for three.

Sean Dickson scored four before he was well caught at mid on by Jamie McIlroy making it  112 for four and then two balls later Lewis Gregory was caught.

Second ball of the next over Ben Green was caught and bowled by Crane as Somerset slipped from 108 for two to 115 for six.

Speed took his score onto 86 when he was bowled by Douthwaite off 48 balls with nine fours and five sixes.

Roelof van der Merwe saw up the 150 before Craig Overton took a six and followed up with a four as 14 runs came off the 18th over.

Overton smote the first ball of the final over bowled by McIlroy high into the air for a six but next ball but one he was run out for 42.

Riley Meredith came to the wicket with one ball remaining which he duly hit for six as Somerset ended on 193 for eight, Van her Merwe ending unbeaten on 21 off 15 balls.

Overton gave Somerset the perfect start when he had Kiran Carlson caught at third man by Smeed off the last ball of the first over. Meredith’s opening over was even better, he bowled five dot balls and then had Eddie Byrom caught by ‘keeper Banton making Glamorgan eight for two.

Sam Northeast and Marcus Labuschagne steadied the situation and took the total onto 38 when Gregory accounted for the latter LBW for nine.

New batsman Colin Ingram scored four when he was caught by Dickson off Overton who ended his four over spell two for 35.

Next over saw Northeast caught at fine leg by Jake Ball off Gregory for 24, as Glamorgan slipped to 51for five.

At the halfway stage Glamorgan had moved onto 57 for five which became six when Gregory bowled Douthwaite for two, bringing his total of T20 wickets for Somerset to 139, equalling Max Waller’s record.

Ball came back into the attack and first ball he had Van der Gugten caught by Gregory at cover, then with his last delivery he had Chris Cooke caught on the boundary by Ben Green.

Van der Merwe came into the attack for the 14th over and with his first ball had Crane stumped by Banton, then with his next ball he bowled McIloy as Glamorgan were all out for 85 in 13.2 overs, giving Somerset victory by 108 runs.

Gregory ended with three wickets for 11 runs from his three overs, while Van der Merwe took two off two balls without conceding a run.
