A tense finish at The Green as Wembdon claimed an important victory to remain top of the table.

Winning the toss, Wembdon elected to bat first.  It was a strong and steady start for the opening pair of Anning and Everett.

The first 5 overs were low scoring but the pair grew into their partnership a few boundaries helped boost the run rate and after 10 overs Wembdon had reached 39 without loss.

Yeovil in search of a wicket rotated their bowlers, spin was introduced.  Spin or seam, neither could get through the opening pair.

With the innings progressing Anning looked to play some more aggressive strokes and he landed 3x 6's to declare his intent.

Sadly Anning having reached 49 would be the first batter to depart but an impressive opening stand of 96 for the first wicket coming from 23 overs had given Wembdon an excellent platform.

Four runs later and Everett would be caught behind for 38 as Wembdon found themselves 100 for 2.

The new pairing of Puddy and De Zoysa favoured much better.  Puddy got off the mark with a boundary first ball, dispatching a wide delivery.

Puddy was definitely the more aggressive of the two and he raced to 44 from 50 deliveries.  A stand of 64 for the 3rd wicket ensured Wembdon had the momentum going into the final 10 overs.

With seven wickets in hand the incoming batters looked to play aggressively and rightly so.  Trunks struck an early boundary but was bowled for 8.  Brockwell managed two boundaries before being caught on 13.  Love struck the ball very firmly but was caught on the boundary.  Wembdon had lost 4 wickets in 6 overs.

Wembdon were targeting 250 but it now looked unlikely as Yeovil fought back well with the ball.  As the 6th wicket fell Wembdon were on 194 with 4 overs remaining but a nice cameo from Pope 14 and De Zoysa 55 not out boosted Wembdon to 234 striking 12, 10 and 12 again from the final 3 overs.

In response Ford came out and struck some early boundaries against Pope while Brockwell conceded just 4 runs from his first 6 overs.

Yeovil reached 25 from 6 overs but could only add 3 runs from the next 5 overs as Wembdon fought back.

This pressure brought about the first wicket as Pope trapped Gundry LBW and bowled Fuller in the next over, Yepovil 28 for 2.

Ford remained and the dangerous Chesterman who's been in good form strode to the crease.

The new pair added 30 when Brockwell got his reward having Ford (32) caught behind.  Chacko the new batter survived one ball before launching his second high, Everett taking a good catch.

Yeovil 58 for 4 from 17 overs.

Chesterman was striking the ball well, driving through the off side a particular strength. Partnered by Ewens the pair added 64 for the 5th wicket.  Wembdon had introduced De Zoysa and Everett by this stage, taking the pace off the ball.  Yeovil's strength was the strike rotation, running between the wickets by a younger side was notably better than Wembdon in the middle overs and this gradually clawed Yeovil back into the contest.

Wembdon had to wait 15 overs for a wicket when Everett bowled Ewens for 23.

Love replaced De Zoysa and he claimed the prize wicket of Chesterman (51) with Sellick taking the match defining catch.

Yeovil at 129 for 6 looked dead and buried with 14 overs remaining.

Love and Everett couldn't strike again.  Sellick came in to the attack but went wicketless from his 5 overs.

The pairing of Veale and Hanrhan with nothing to lose struck a series of boundaries and had Wembdon rattled.  The score progressed quickly with 12 coming from the 45th over, taking Yeovil on the verge of 200.

As the pressure mounted on Wembdon the skipper brought back Pope early.  His initial over crucially only went for 3.  His next over got the breakthrough bowling Hanrahan for 32.

Needing to find an over from somewhere the skipper gave the ball to very part time seamer Trunks and he delivered conceding just 7 but bowling the last remaining threat Veale for 46.

This enabled Pope to come back for the final over with Yeovil needing 14 to win from 6 deliveries but with the tailend now in.

Conceding just 2 runs from the first two deliveries, Pope then caught and bowled Brighton.

Yeovil needed 12 off 3 and 9 wickets down.  The next ball Yeovil attempted a quick single but Pope gathered the ball and got the run out from just over a yard away.

The innings finished on 223 all out with two balls remaining.

Wembon now have two away fixtures at Chard next Saturday and then Temple Cloud the week after.  A tight finish to the season with 3 or 4 teams looking to compete for the title.
