A BRIDGWATER swimmer has been named in the Great Britain swimming squad for this summer’s Paralympics in Paris.

Cameron Vearncombe, 22, has attended back-to-back Para Swimming World Championships with the British team and is set to make his first-ever Paralympics appearance in Paris this year.

Vearncombe will be competing alongside 26 other Team GB athletes including 15 debutants and 11 returning Paralympians.

Vearncombe competes in ‘S14’ events including freestyle, backstroke and butterfly events for talented swimmers with an intellectual impairment.

These impairments can make it difficult for swimmers to understand and apply training techniques and competition strategies.

The athletes may also have trouble with pattern recognition, sequencing, and memory, or have slower reaction time.

Vearncombe is a strong competitor for Team GB after picking up a bronze medal in Paralympic trials back in April.

Competing at last year’s World Championships, Vearncombe will be looking to win a medal at his first-ever Paralympics where he will be competing in multiple events including the SM14 200m Individual Medley.

The athlete’s personal best times include an SB14 100m Breaststroke time of 1:09:20 in 2022 and an SM14 200m Individual Medley time of 2:13:22 in 2023.

Paralympics chef de mission Penny Briscoe said: “I’m delighted that we can celebrate the first athletes to join the Paralympics GB team for Paris 2024 – our swimming squad.

“Our 26 swimmers represent an exciting mix of youth and experience, and there’s no doubt they all have fantastic potential to make Great Britain proud in Paris this summer.”
