Bridgwater Cricket Club’s first XI missed out on top spot in the league by just two points, despite victory over Burbage & Easton Royal on Saturday (August 31).

Having won the toss and elected to bat first, Bridgwater posted a total of 222-9 from their 50 overs and managed to bowl out Burbage & Easton Royal for 180.

Victory gave them 20 points, meanwhile Potterne Cricket Club managed to seal 21 points in victory over Taunton St Andrews.

Bridgwater’s batting innings didn’t start well thought as opener James Regan had faced just two balls when former Somerset bowler Peter Trego bowled him for a duck.

Jacob Lintott and Charlie Sharland recovered the innings to out on 57 for the second wicket before Lintott was caught by Trego off the bowling of Adam Ball for 19 off 49 balls.

That brought captain Alex Eckland to the crease. Charlie Sharland was next to go for 44 runs off 69 balls leaving Bridgwater on 88-3.

In came Williams Smeed and along with Eckland, they put on a stand of 90 runs and both scored half centuries. Eckland was next out as he was caught by David Cope off the bowling of Jonny Sadler.

Bridgwater lost another three wickets before the 200 was up as William Smeed went for 65 while Luke Pearson Taylor and Ryan Thorpe both failed to score a run.

Mike Coles and Seth Locke steadied the ship until  the later was caught by Cope off the bowling of Ball with the score at 214-8. Bridgwater finished at 222-9.

Burbage & Easton Royal put just five runs on the board when Bridgwater struck first with Cope out for three runs having been caught by Smeed off the bowling of Pearson Taylor.

The second wicket fell soon after with Crofton Keyes also out for three runs and the score was on 8-2.

Burbage & Easton Royal added 15 runs before the third wicket fell and by the time the home side had resched 50 runs, they were six wickets down.

The seventh fell with the score at 53 but they managed to put on 43 runs for eighth wicket when Alby Berridge was bowled by Max Toohey.

The tail definitely wagged for the home side as they put on 51 for the nineth wicket before Pearson Taylor made the breakthrough. He also took the final wicket giving Bridgwater a 42-run victory.

Bridgwater’s seconds were also in action in their final game of the season and they defeated Frome at home by 103 runs. Bridgwater seconds finished third behind Taunton CC and Wembdon.
