Bridgwater College brushed aside local rivals Richard Huish with an emphatic 4-1 victory on a small and muddy pitch.

The game started at a frantic pace with both sides attempting to play attacking and open football in difficult conditions.

Despite dominating the early exchanges, Richard Huish had the first chance of the game with a close range volley forcing Bridgwater goalkeeper Alex Henderson into an outstanding double save.

Bridgwater started to control possession with the midfield trio of Tom Hopkins, Matt Hurley and Charlie Conway working tirelessly to close down the opposition.

The second half began in much the same pattern as the first, with Bridgwater on top but failing to create many clear-cut chances.

The pressure finally told on 50 minutes as right winger John Pykett bamboozled the Richard Huish full back before delivering an inch-perfect cross allowing Hurley to ram home a close range shot.

Bridgwater doubled their advantage only minutes later as Pykett again beat his defender before finding Hopkins at the far post who finished with aplomb.

The Bridgwater front three of Alex Pathy, John Pykett and Adam Long proceeded to cause havoc in the Huish defence who looked unable to cope with the Bridgwater pace, creativity and determination.

Pykett was rewarded for his magnificent work rate as he fired low into the goal from 20 yards to make the score 3-0.

The lead was shortened almost immediately however, as Huish responded with a rare attack into the Bridgwater box and defender Robbie Hughes was harshly ruled to have pulled back the Huish forward.

The scoring was completed on 85 minutes as Matt Hurley displayed excellent composure to slot home from close range when under pressure from three Richard Huish defenders.

Bridgwater College’s squad coach Luke Buckingham said: “This was an outstanding team performance and the result was a fair reflection of our domination throughout the game.

“It’s pleasing to see such a mature and determined performance from a team containing eight first year players which bodes well for the rest of the season.”
