Bridgwater’S recent improved away form continued with this win at Abingdon last night.

The teams were for the most part evenly matched but Bridgwater’s goal threat was confined to free-kicks by Townley on the left and long throws by Peek on the other flank.

Both tactics gave the home defence some anxious moments. For their part, Abingdon attacked down the left, where Davis enjoyed some space.

Abingdon’s five first-half corners all came from attacks down this side.

Abingdon took the lead on 18 minutes.

Snook got the wrong side of Mills and failed to get his tackle in, allowing the striker to beat Wood in Bridgwater’s goal from ten yards.

For Bridgwater, George Brimson made a promising debut and his best moment came on 43 minutes, when following an interception in his own half, he made good ground before smashing his 30-yard shot against the bar.

Wood kept the score down to one at the interval, turning Harper’s shot past the post.

It was surprising that he was allowed to play in his yellow jersey, as the home side were also kitted out in yellow.

The second half was also even but Jones was now finding more space with his runs.

Twenty-four minutes into the half, Moon was fouled out on the right and Townley delivered a superb free-kick on to the head of Peek, who scored from six yards. Just three minutes later, Bridgwater took the lead.

Townley won a challenge in midfield and sent the ball down the left.

The referee, ignoring a flag-waving assistant, allowed play to continue. Jones centred and a defender, under pressure from Kozlowski, turned the ball into his own net.

Bridgwater were looking solid at the back with Farmer adding his defensive qualities.

Understandably, there was not much adventure from Bridgwater’s midfield but in breakaways, Jones offered a willing outlet.

The game ended on a sour note when Abingdon keeper Beames rushed out to the corner flag to halt Kozlowski and his crude challenge earned a red card, but soon after, Bridgwater were reflecting on a sound performance that had brought a first win on this ground.

Team: Wood, Nunn, Turner, Pitcher (Kozlowski 70), Townley, Robertson, Snook (Farmer 63), Moon (Mercieca 70), Peek, Jones, Brimson.
