Bridgwater Town's long wait for a win in front of their home supporters ended with this superb victory over mid-table North Leigh at Fairfax Park on Saturday.

On a pitch made heavy by recent rain the opening exchanges were fairly even.

Carl Jones went close for Bridgwater while North Leigh had two early chances, but with inspirational skipper Andy Robertson driving them on, the home side started to get on top, with new signing George Brimson and Simon Lyons impressing in particular.

On 21 minutes, Rhys Farmer gave Bridgwater a deserved lead, beating a defender and then rounding the keeper.

A minute later, North Leigh’s Ben Reardon struck a post, before Town were forced into a defensive reshuffle, when Josh Turner went off injured, with Kyle Thomas coming on for his debut.

With Thomas linking up well with Robertson, Lyons and Hongi Moon, Bridgwater took control of the midfield.

The second goal was a fine solo effort from Brimson, cutting in from the left on 33 minutes.

Five minutes later, the visitors were reduced to ten men, when Kieran Saunders was dismissed for striking a Bridgwater defender in the home side’s area.

Carl Thomas nearly doubled Bridgwater’s lead but his 20-yard shot hit the post, before Andy Caton missed a good chance to equalise just before half-time, but he headed wide.

On 56 minutes, Robertson burst through the middle and his powerful shot was parried; Carl Jones fired the rebound over with the goal gaping.

Thomas nearly stretched Bridgwater’s lead but his shot was cleared off the line.

However, the third goal Bridgwater had threatened arrived in the 75th minute, when Jones fed Brimson who shot powerfully home from just inside the area.

Three minutes later it was four when substitute Sean Kenny did brilliantly to set up Jones for an easy finish.

Thomas forced North Leigh keeper Lonsdale into a fine save but North Leigh did not give up, and in the closing moments Joe Burnell hit the bar.

There was a big cheer from the home fans when the final whistle brought to a close Bridgwater’s best home performance of the season.
