WITH both the first and second XV at home on Saturday, coach Nick Hill was able to get a brief look at how the second XV were faring in their first season of Somerset 1 league activity.

After the opening 20 minutes he must have left with mixed feelings as the United youngsters fluffed their lines and the game remained goalless.

But had he been able to stay for the next 60 minutes, he would have seen a complete reversal of fortune as Albion finally clicked into gear.

The pattern was set when Dave Norman finished off a neat training ground move to score from a lineout.

He followed this up shortly afterwards with a similar close-range effort before Roger Drabble and Nick Bradley added further tries.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half saw tries being run in from all over the pitch as Albion forwards and backs linked to smash holes in the opposition defence.

Winger James Kerry got on the score sheet as he finished a sweeping move by touching down in the corner, before opposite winger Tom Denovan also helped himself to a try.

Most of the damage was being caused by 18-year-old lock Rob Thompson who was rampaging around the field and causing would-be tacklers all sorts of problems.

He added two tries in as many minutes and with the goal kickers having a good day the score rapidly raced along into the 50s.

Complacency was probably creeping into Albion's play at this stage and the visitors were rewarded with an unconverted try.

Norman extended his remarkable scoring record for a hooker with his third try of the match.

In a show of solidarity from the front row, Dale Norman stepped up to slot the conversion.

There was just time for replacement winger Andrew Clark to round off the scoring, cutting a sweet angle to collect a pass from stand off Jamie Coates.

Clark added the extra points by drop kicking the ball through the uprights for his first ever conversion attempt.

Although the opposition were not as strong as some that they will encounter over the next few weeks, the game acted as a good confidence booster for United.
