INJURIES to key players meant that Petherton were always up against it in this physical encounter.

Throughout the game, Petherton lost Rich Winter, Ollie Steward, Lee Palmer, Andy Prowse and Pete Woollacott.

Playing with the slope Petherton got off to the worst possible start when a good period of pressure ended with them losing the ball and Chard's winger running 60 metres to score in the corner.

Unfortunately this set the tone for the match as Petherton constantly struggled to retain possession and Chard always took full advantage of any mistakes.

Phil Hambly in particular was having an excellent game and constantly made hard yards, but Petherton's support play let them down.

After conceding three soft tries, Petherton finally got on the scoreboard when flanker Jimmy Hancock crashed over in the corner, the conversion was missed.

Petherton's second came from their hooker Rees Betty after some good work from the forwards turned over Chard's ball and Betty outpaced the defence to score from just inside the Chard half, Hancock converted.

Petherton's last score also came from Hancock's boot when he slotted over a penalty.

The second half mirrored the first as Petherton battled hard but could not take advantage of the good field position and despite some excellent defence from Petherton, Chard continued to score.

Petherton know that they will have to lower the error count for the forthcoming visit of Hornets 3rds. Centre Lee Palmer and number 8 Phil Hambly were the pick of the Petherton players.
