THE day's second local derby game was between Venus and Emeralds was always going to be closely contested.
Venus began the game slowly, with both sides playing goal for goal as Venus managed to lead 10-9 after the first period.
In the second quarter, Venus managed to maintain their slim lead with excellent defending in the circle from Hannah Symes (GD) and Julie McClean (GK), restricting Emeralds’ flow and shooting accuracy, finishing 18-15 up at half time.
Venus made a centre court change but failed to capitalise on their lead in the third quarter and, with lots of misplaced chances, struggled to increase their lead. Luckily, their nerve held and they maintained the status quo at 25-22.
In the final quarter, Sammy Kemmish’s shooting came into its own and with Venus determined to win the game, team spirit kicked in and they pulled ahead to win.
Player of the match was Julie McClean.
