Bridgwater suffered a third consecutive heavy defeat when travelling up the M5 to Almondsbury on Wednesday, writes Eddie Robinson.

Almondsbury started much the brighter and took the lead on five minutes having already had the ball in the net, only to be denied by the off side flag.

Durrant failed to cut out a right wing cross and Mahdi, in space, easily beat Wood from ten yards.

Bridgwater’s new upfront pairing of Dean Grubb and Alexis Piper were very seldom in sight of the Almondsbury net as the service up to them was non-existent.

Piper had Bridgwater’s only first half effort on target when his long range shot was comfortably held by goalkeeper Jones on 26 minutes.

Bridgwater were unable to spring two passes together and only wayward shooting by the home forwards enabled Brigwater to reach half time just the one goal down.

After a poor first half, Bridgwater improved after the interval and possession was shared equally by the two sides after the break.

Bridgwater gifted their hosts a second goal on 58 minutes. A free kick was sailing harmlessly wide but Townley on the by-line unnecessarily played the ball across the face of goal to the feet of Peckham who couldn’t fail to score from five yards.

Ten minutes, later Robertson was robbed in midfield. The ball was quickly played to Mahdi who again gave wood no chance with his finish.

Thomas, twice played in by Lyons, threatened with good efforts while on the other wing Brimson, who has failed to recapture the sparkling form of his debut, was foiled by an unkind bobble as he was about to shoot following a surge down the middle.

Bridgwater won their first corner after 81 minutes when sub Young’s overhead flick forced keeper Jones to make his first difficult save of the evening.

Four minutes from time, Grubb allowed a tame effort to bounce through to keeper Jones, a quick clearance found Bridgwater’s defence over stretched and Kline-Davies completed the scoring.

Bridgwater Town: Wood, Durrant, Nunn, Pitcher (78 Young), Townley, Robertson (Jones 80), Lyons, Thomas, Grubb (Mercieca 86), Piper, Brimson.
